The Newark Generals lost the state championship in overtime after a close game.

The Generals faced off against Medina in the Buckeye Cup. The two teams had been tied the whole game when, with 17.1 seconds left in overtime, Medina scored against the Gens.

The playoff tournament began on Feb. 22 when the Newark Generals faced off against Dayton in the semifinals.

Junior Cole Jaquith and senior Ben Dennis both had third period goals to tie it up to go into overtime. Early into overtime, Chase Cherubini scored a goal to win the game for the Gens and send them to the state championship.

Although the Generals lost, Charlie Smart was named tournament MVP for having 72 saves in the semifinal and final game. In the championship game against Medina, Charlie Smart had 54 saves.

The Generals had a pretty successful season this year. Hopefully, they can go all the way next year.
